About
Drill and Deal teaches mining finance the way it is practised in investment banking: from the first drill hole to the takeover of the mine, with the calculations, the technical reports and the interview questions that go with them.
Who is behind it
Drill and Deal is made and run by Antoine Routaboul, a Global BBA student at ESSEC Business School (class of 2029).
I am preparing for a career in investment banking, specialising in metals, mining and natural resources M&A, and I am applying for internships in London and Toronto. To get there, I spent hours myself practising the online tests (numerical, logical, technical) that banks set from the application stage.
I made Drill and Deal because this kind of practice is often expensive, scattered or poorly suited to finance recruiting. I wanted one place to practise in real test conditions, with clear corrections, so that candidates have the same chance of getting through this first stage.
How the site is made
- The lectures. 15 finance lectures, from the time value of money to the interview. 10 mining finance chapters and 5 studies of real takeovers, in English and French. Each mining chapter ends with a quiz, and each finance lecture with a worked problem set.
- The interview questions. 333 questions with a model answer, each linked to the lecture or chapter that explains it.
- The sources. Each mining chapter lists its sources: resource reporting codes, regulations and public company documents. News items are dated and cite theirs.
- The figures. They are rounded and the models simplified for learning. Kestrel Ridge, the mine you build in the course, is an illustrative company. Metal prices show their date and source.
- The images. The photos come from Wikimedia Commons; their author and licence are shown under each one.
What the site is not
Drill and Deal is not investment advice: nothing on the site asks you to buy or sell a security. The site carries no advertising, no sponsored links and no trackers.
